JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Any cures for squeaky shoes? I got caught in a downpour while wearing a pair of Uggs suede loafers. They look fine, but now both shoes squeak. I tried the powder trick I found online, but that doesn't do anything that I can see. I suspect the glue in the insoles came loose and air trapped between the insole and the sole is causing the squeaking. Is this something I can fix myself? My shoe repair guy would probably charge more than the shoes are worth to reglue them.

  2. What do you ladies pair your navy bottoms (pants, skirts) with? I love the color navy but have a hard time pairing with items in my closet (I wear mostly solid color tops), so was hoping to get some styling advice from you :)

    1. Navy can be tough to pair without it looking like a school uniform. My favorite combos are navy with pearl gray or pale/mint green.

    2. In spring/summer I pair navy with brighter greens (lighter than kelly green, more like a lime or chrome green), and olive or pine green in fall. Year- round I'll do navy with lighter or brighter blues (eg , an ice blue sweater, a turquoise blazer). I also like navy with a bright white button-down and just a pop of fuchsia, eg a scarf. Basically, I aim for contrast so the navy looks "fresh" and not too drab -- not really sure how else to explain it. HTH!

    3. I love to wear navy with a print (ideally one with navy in it) to make the look less stark.

    4. So many options! I pair it with pink (bright or pale), mint green, grey, ivory, oxford blue/pinstripes or prints. I like neutral shoes or metallic or grey with navy bottoms as well. It's more versatile than you think :)

    5. Navy is my go-to neutral! Agree with others above- grey, pink, white, pretty much any rich/saturated jewel tone (fuschias, ruby reds, bright greens). A shortcut to get out of your head- would it go with classic dark wash denim? Then it goes with navy!

    6. I pair navy with that modern red color - orangy-red, and with a good bright yellow! And stripes!

    7. Navy with stripes (blue/white), and navy with leopard print (which I consider to be a neutral). Navy with gold to be fancy; navy with ivory to be classy. Navy with pink to be trendy. Navy is awesome!

    8. I might be the only one but i love navy with black.

    9. Wow thanks for all these ideas! Navy does sound more versatile than I thought. I usually wear navy with black too but now am excited to try the combos you all suggested. Love the idea of comparing it to dark wash denim. Thanks!

    10. Black is also my go to navy pairing. Also taupe-y nudes like natural linen flax.

  3. I've been curious about the long sleeve rashguards for some time...are they hot on the beach, at the pool or just using as regular swim wear? I get the sun protection factor, etc., but I have never bought one because I am afraid that I will sweat like crazy.

    1. I got a sleeveless rashguard because I always wear a two piece. I'll be honest, my back and stomach get hotter and sweatier than anything else. I don't think the sleeves would be the issue for me!

    2. The rash guards are not a substitute for a top so you will probably need to wear a top underneath (unless you have a smaller chest maybe you can get away with it). I have one of the long sleeve one piece suits and it is definitely warm. I got it for a steal but it is warm and I get sweaty especially in the chest area because of the double layer. Maybe they'd be more comfortable if you were in the water and cooled down but when I've had them on for sun avoidance while sitting out at the beach/pool, I just stick myself in the shade or under an umbrella.

    3. As long as you are in the water you will be fine but if you are sitting in the sun (especially in the peak of summer) you are going to be hot. My kids and nephews wear the rash guards without complaining but they are constantly in the water. I throw mine on when I am going to be in the water with them and I feel like I’ve gotten too much sun. Also, if it’s early/late in the summer and the heat is not as intense they are ok to wear sitting out in the sun.

    4. I wore one while seakayaking and snorkeling in New Zealand. I think they're great for wearing on top of a bathing suit when doing something active and constantly in/out of water. I got a JC long sleeve one though and I still tanned through it. It was striped and I looked like a piece of meat with grill marks when I took it off (my friends had a good a laugh). It was SPF 50! I still put on sunblock before I put it on though. When I was in Tahiti, it was too hot for me to have it on when I was just sunbathing.

    5. I now wear long sleeve rashguards over my bathing suit everytime we go to the beach. It has to fit well (tight but not too tight), if it's too loose I'd actually get cold from the wind blowing between the layers LoL

  4. @rashawnda great question!! Just what I’m always afraid of

  5. Try on of the wide leg silk pant, drapey crepe cap sleeve top in polka dot and a Poshmark find,t he matter curator pant from 2010, which I had been looking for--posted on IG @wearthislikethis.
The wide leg pants don't wow me, the polka dots are cute and the curator pants are a little loose but a great pair of black pants.

  6. The lack of new arrivals right now is really odd. For example, there are no cute short-sleeve or sleeveless tops (maybe a couple but those are really boring). There was supposed to be a major rollout the last rollout, but it was tiny. I don't even remember when the last big rollout was. It's really unfortunate because J Crew used to be my go-to for spring/summer clothes.

    1. I agree about the short sleeve, sleeveless tops. I really like the white military style short sleeve top, but it is already sold out in my size. Also like the cotton sleeveless popovers but agree they are simple and basic and also in limited colors. There always seems to be a shortage of good short sleeve and sleeveless options. I can always count on them for a long sleeve collared button down shirt though.

  7. Is there ever going to be another catalog?? I haven't received anything since Christmas time.

    1. I don't think so. I think the company is really trying to cut back on expenses. I do wish it comes back soon, so I can get more inspiration.

    2. Maybe consider an online catalogue? It might draw more to the website, which might lead to shopping, the main goal. Something "interactive" or at least the ability to see different poses or styles with the cursor, similar to what they do now with a little something " extra"

    3. I like reading the blog and seeing the clothes in action and reality but a catalogue showing the new roll out items would really make it more attractive to me as the customer.

    4. @Rashawnda that is a great alternative. I don't mind having an online catalog to look at. I think what would really excite people to buying new clothes is going to be a video explaining the products that are going to be rolled out. Talking about the pieces like the garments, relaunch of throwbacks, updates, etc.

    5. I don't understand why they're not doing more on Pinterest or Instagram. I like the print catalog but don't need it. I browse Pinterest every few days and IG Daily. That would help.

  8. Okay this is not related to JC but I am looking at some Naturalizer shoe styles. Specifically the Sloan mule and Thea espadrille platform shoe. What would you pair the white Sloan with other than more white? I've never owned a white shoe and don't often wear white. I've been wearing a lot of black/charcoal pants lately and I'm not sure if I'll like the look of that with white shoes. Maybe.

On the Thea, can anyone comment on whether shoes like this are comfortable for walking around a lot? I'm not sure about the thicker platform sole in terms of stiffness. What would you pair the gunmetal and gold colors with? I'm not usually a gunmetal person but their promo photos really sell it. Same with the gold. I don't think I'd like gold paired with black/charcoal pants/jeans but I like the look they have in their promo photo with the neutral-y colors.

Anyone buy the JC funnelneck long sleeve top?
