Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. I might visit this weekend to return a pencil skirt because, of course, today, six weeks after I bought it, it's marked WAY down.

So I rebought this morning - and the sale section had some gems! Haven't shopped in a while but I saw some new things there - a pale blue bow waist pencil skirt ($60), the fun striped orange/blue/yellow/pink swimsuit ($23!) and rash guard ($34) that I'd eyed early this summer, and two Italian matte swimsuits for $40-ish. None of it final sale. Best thing is I can pick up in store and avoid seven packages for seven items. Is this new???

  2. thoughts on this, and why retail is having an issue

Was in a JC store yesterday, woman looking at the kids clothing, she was asking questions about the girls dresses. Questions answered she leaves saying "I do everything online"

I thought to myself if you are in the store why not buy them there?
or should the sales people have done something to place her order then.

it was a "teaching moment" to me potential business just walking out of the store.
    Or am I wrong ?

PS there was no one in the store at all

    1. I wonder if the reason the woman didn't buy anything in store is simply b/c online sales are better than whatever the store is offering. I suspect individual stores have a higher overhead to deal with, including rent, staff and related services so their target numbers to break even/profit must be higher. Who knows though. In any case, the SA at your store should've at least offered to order the items for the customer - no harm in that. The other day I asked for an item in my size, but my store didn't have it so the SA offered to order it for me. I said I would order it later (which I did), rather than have them do it, b/c I was in a rush and b/c I wanted to browse online for other things that weren't available in store. But I know part of the appeal with online ordering is simply that the sales and range of items is bigger and better.

Others have complained about the decline in SA knowledge, training and willingness to help so that's a big part of it, too. A lot of longtime SAs have left the company, it seems.

    2. I read an article recently saying that stores of the future will not be for buying merchandise, but simply for brands to interact with customers. Orders for merchandise will all be placed online. Sort of like the Bonobos model already.

    3. Oh, that's really interesting, Cass, and it makes sense. I know stores can't carry every single style, color and size, but I still like to see things in person before I buy, as well as the ability to interact with some nice SAs in person.

    5. That makes sense to me Cass. It's much better than stores carrying inventory they won't sale.

With that said, if I am specifically coming in to a store to get support from associates I feel it's a bit rude not to buy there, if you decide to buy something. I am especially conscious of this for folks working on commission. The only exception is if the staff is rude or their policy frustrating, which is how I feel about the DT Portland store.

    6. Would her window for returning be longer if she ordered online, or did they change that policy? It used to be you'd have 60 days if you ordered online and only 30 days if you bought in store.

      Delete
    7. It's true, it's still 60 days to return from online.

    8. just came back to read responses, thanks it's interesting.

different sales online---that's been a bug of mine for years and if it's better on line vs. store why not fix that?

or have instore and online purchases return be the same

these companies whine about the state of retail then throw up barriers like this and can't figure it out

longer return online certainly makes sense as a buyer

    9. Nordstrom is experimenting w the retail "experience" model Cass mentioned. And Nordstrom already has a pretty great in store experience IMO.

While I love to go to the store and see and touch and try on, I admit I mostly buy online and return in store. I use ship to store pretty often too.

The service in my store has really declined. SAs are snippier, not as willing to help, and I seriously know more about what's going on w company policies, merch and promotions than most of the new ones. I'll go in and ask when they are getting a new item and call it by name (Parke Blazer) and they'll look stunned. This has been a trend in my store since the demise of PSs. I get way better service online.

  3. Some great pop backs this morning, ao last year's Campbell blazer in crimson plaid. Didn't buy it earlier as I was afraid it might be too loud for my corporate environment. It probably still is, but I took it as a sign that the only size available was my size;-))

  4. Happy Friday, JCA's! I posted a bunch of reviews in Tuesday's thread but since that's getting further down the page I'll repost here.

Collection rugby sweater (H0864) - Unfortunately, I guessed wrong on the sizing. I ordered my usual S and it was enormous, kind of folding at the front placket to make a pleat accentuating how bit it was on me. The knit is bonded and seems really nice. I like how the stripes are navy/ivory and the collar is stark white. I’m 5’5” and the back went to the back of my knees. I predict that this will pop back as people realize how huge it is, and then probably sell out again in the smaller sizes as everybody sizes down.

1984 rugby shirt in stripe (G8325) - I was telling cate that I feel like Goldilocks with this shirt... the S feels slightly too small and the M feels slightly too big. I think what I'd really like is about an inch more length and slightly longer sleeves. The proportions are similar across shirts so it's not like you gain much length from a bigger size. Just didn't love... but now that I think about it, I didn't particularly love the rugby shirt that I wore in high school, either.

Ruffle top in metallic star print (G9970) - Again, guessed wrong on the size. I ordered my usual 4 and didn’t realize it was a popover, which don’t work on my body as they tend to cling around the bottom. The rest of the body was that kind of cocoony shape. A 6 would’ve worked better but the cotton/silk is paper thin and I wouldn’t wear it enough to justify the $50+ I paid for it. If it goes to super sale I may revisit.

Striped mock neck sweater in merino wool (H1141) - I ordered this before the website updated to show that it was a wool/nylon/cashmere blend, which I never would’ve ordered as it tends to pill terribly. The S fit fine but I didn’t love the heather camel near my face as it made me look washed out.

Pull-on toothpick jean in indigo (G8586) - I’ve been dressing little_lining in the equivalent of these since she was little and have joked about wanting a pair in my size. I ordered my usual toothpick size (28) and they are pretty much the same as those baby jeggings! They were fine but unremarkable and I think I prefer real jeans - they’re not comfy enough for lounging because the legs are skintight.

V-neck t-shirt in Supima cotton (G9046) - Soft, TTS, not terribly long. I needed some v-necks to replace some worn out Madewell ones (04346) from a few years ago, but to be honest I may go with the $7 ones from Target’s new line (A New Day?). Those feel and fit a lot like the Madewell tees.

J.Crew Factory tie-waist shirtdress (G9296) - You’re not able to see this from the item pic, but it has an elasticized waist which for me, really limits its wearability. I like to have the option to wear a shirtdress as a long tunic/coat but this one would have to be worn with a belt. Otherwise, it’s pretty cute and the fabric is heavier than I anticipated. I found it to be TTS.

    1. Thanks silver_lining! Still haven't gotten the size down in the rugby shirt. I'm waiting until I have both before I take the tags off one and keep it, but I think it'll be the larger one I keep. I feel exactly the same as you - I wish there were more length.

      Delete
    2. Thanks so much for your thoughts on these items!

I was eyeing the 1984 rugby in the olive colorway but hesitated and now it's on back order until December. I got the rugby they released earlier in the summer and while the colors are cheery and I do wear it, it's not my favorite fit - which is why I hesitated in ordering! I think I'm going to skip it altogether.

I'm very disappointed to hear that the "merino" mockneck is actually that dreaded Dream knit. No bueno.

I actually love the new Supima v-neck tees! I bought the black on sale and it accidentally went through the regular wash and dryer (I usually have to wash J Crew tees in unicorn tears, lol) and not only did it survive, but no holes, no shrinking, no fading, and no weird twisted seams. If anything, it's even softer now. I've since picked up the white. I'll have to check out the new Target tees though!

    3. Forgot, I ordered and returned the striped mock neck sweater too. I didn't notice the fabric content, but I want all wool or all cotton, none of these blends. I returned it for the color, though. It did nothing on me. The fit was fine though. I considered trying it in a solid color until I saw that the fabric is that blend.

    4. I ordered the collection rugby sweater in an XL, the last size that was left. I like oversized things but this is ridiculously huge! I think a 300lb. football player could fit in it. The sleeves are at least 12" circumference. (I take a large or an XL in JCrew sweaters.) I agree that there are going to be a lot of returns of larger sizes. I'm wondering if a small would fit better!

      Delete
    5. I can't even get the Collection Rugby Sweater to come up on a search so I can bookmark and keep checking back. The style number isn't even bringing it up.

      Delete
    6. @cate NY Collection store (212.249.3869) has limited stock; ordered a small since it looks like my usual medium will be too big.

      Delete
    7. I received the Large in the mail today (the first one I got was an XL and my review is a couple comments up.) It is huge, too! It could fit a 250 lb football player! The body of it might be able to work in a huge, slouchy way, but the sleeves are so wide from the shoulder to the elbow that I can't imagine who it would fit. This sweater is so well made and cute - it's really too bad that the sizing is made so poorly.

  5. I was just there yesterday to pick up my online order-- the faux leopard fur coat, which I ended up returning, as it did not flatter me and was strangely tight and long.

I noticed and loved the new fuchsia color of the Stadium Cloth Cocoon Coat, but I won't buy it because I don't want to find myself standing next to a woman wearing the exact same special-color coat on the subway, which happened to me a bunch of times last winter with the iced lilac color of this coat!

I am more likely to go to Zara this weekend. Breezed through yesterday and saw a lot I wanted to try on.

  6. A few unrelated JC thoughts

    1) Nordstrom has the tulle jackie cardi in a nice lilac color that was never offered at JC. I am tempted to buy it, but hate buying JC without promo and Nordstrom doesn't have promos. I have been having problems with Jackies fading and pilling recently so I don't want to pay anywhere near FP.

    2) If you missed out on the Liberty puffer, Nordstrom has some left in size S, but they have it priced at $298 and won't match JC's $250 regular price because it is sold out there.

    3) If JC is fulfilling orders from stores, why are the rugby shirts all backordered til Dec online, but at least 2 stores I went into recently had full racks of them? Are they no longer fulfilling from stores?

    4) Leopard coat is selling out everywhere. I guess it will be this year's pink faux fur coat. The style is not for me at all, but I did try it on for fun and it was TTS on me.

    1. I suspect they fill orders from store mostly for clearance or older stock. If they did it with recently released stock, then in-store shoppers would never have a chance at it. In my store it sometimes takes a couple days for the store to get everything up once they receive it, which means it's possible for the inventory not to make it to the floor if it sells out online. It's also probably easier for JCrew to handle the orders strictly online if they are re-ordering more. I can imagine pulling all the inventory from stores, meeting the demand of online customers, and then having to redistribute the back order merchandise to store.

  8. Placed an order for some Crewcuts jewelry for my daughter and tacked on the leather wrap sandals and a pair of ecru jeans for me. The free shipping promo was nice the last few days as was the 30% off. Probably no trip to the store this weekend as my store was lackluster the last time I was there.

  9. No store visit this weekend as I stopped in Wednesday.

OT - do any fellow tall girls have the faux leather pleated mini? Thoughts? It's priced pretty well now with the 30% off and considering it to wear with tights this fall. I have the midi too so contemplating if I'd wear both. Thanks!

    1. Hi Anne, For reference, I am 5'9". I sized up to wear the mini a bit lower on my hips and with tights, it is fine for me. There is a pic on my Instagram feed (jeanrzanoni) from last fall/winter to see it.

    2. I'm 5'6" so not particularly tall, but I actually sometimes roll the waist when I wear it with shirts out, so I think it will be ok for you. I'm tempted to buy a second one.

    3. I'm 5'4", and like Suz, I found the regular to be a little too long so I exchanged for the petite length.

    4. I have the mini in tall and it's fine with or without tights (am just under 5.8). I ended up getting the midi too because I wore the mini so much I'm worried I'll wear it out!

    5. I'm not tall but I bought the mini in a tall size last year to add a little length and make it more work appropriate. I wish they would offer them again in tall because I would love to get more colors.

    8. Anne, I'm 5'7" and have two of the regular minis and one in tall. Both of the regulars are a size up for extra length, while the tall is in my usual skirt size. This makes them more work-appropriate though still above the knee. Hth!

  10. I visited my store to try on some skinny jeans. I actually ordered some yesterday from both Crew and Madewell too. They didn't have the sale ones I ordered at either store but I tried some toothpicks and the lookout highrise at J.crew.
Overall I preferred the toothpick because of the way the zipper is a little shorter than the rise on the lookouts. I did like the longer length of the lookouts though.
Ultimately, with the $20 off for trying on pants, the 30% promo, and my Fall rewards the Classic wash toothpicks came home with me for a very good price.
I may actually order the resin rinse (on sale) in the smaller size since that fit better.
some pics are on IG @wearthislikethis.
For sizing reference, I'm usually a 25 and mostly 0 in pants. The 24 fit better in both styles of jeans. I wasn't crazy about this Lyric wash which is what I specifically went in looking for. I did like the Glendale wash with the raw hem, but my favorite was the darkest ones I bought.
Of course I'll compare all the am.Crew ones with the Madewell ones I ordered and decide which I like best.

    4. I have to post pictures of the velvet bomber. It is beautiful. Lined. The fabric is luxe, and the ribbon closure at the waist along with the zipper is beautiful. It is a piece you could easily wear out in the evening. Lovely. That said, uniqlo, zara, H&M, F21, all have velvet pieces, so does Nordies. 16. Was in a Jcrew store in Farmington,CT a few days ago and they had the new Everyday Cashmere Sweaters available. Very nice and soft. Quality seemed to be good. For reference I tried on a medium and a large and preferred the smaller fit of the two for a little more fitted look. The large was too big overall on me but if some like a looser fit go a size up.

Also tried on the Rugby shirts in Navy/White and Pink/Navy. The Navy combination had larger fit and the Pink smaller. Odd but purchased both in Medium.Would be interested to hear feedback from others who have purchased these. Quality is very nice.

I've never shopped at Shopbop before, but the free 3 day shipping was a nice surprise especially compared to J. Crew's pricey slow shipping. 21. Received the elastic velvet skirt in navy and the pink velvet tank, both in regular xs. And both are going back.
The waist fits but roomy on the sides. I need the skirt to be tapered. Ordered a PS (as soon as I heard they rolled out petite) in both navy and the gold to see IRL.
The tank was a little snug at my upper back. Still deciding if I want to reorder it in size S. I plan on styling it by wearing a white tissue turtleneck underneath. And also pair it with a gray cardigan...

    1. Thanks for the reviews, JSR. I've had this exact same issue with some JC skirts -- fitting at the waist, but too roomy at the hips. Hoping the petite version does the trick for us! Mine is arriving on Tuesday. (I ordered in the gold version, but wondering whether I should've chosen the navy instead -- I think JCA jsjs in the thread below raises a good point about the navy being less likely to be dated in a few years.) How did you like the colors?

    3. The navy is alright. It's so dark that it looks almost black. Totally agree with jsjs, we'll get a lot of use from that color.
I think my PS package arrives Thursday? Gold is a very popular color, definitely trendier than the navy. I'm not sure I would keep the gold skirt; what top would I pair it with? J.Crew styled it with a light blue button up shirt, which I think does not match.
I would wear it with a grey sweater, with white accents. But, hard color to match...

      Delete
    4. Oh, that's a good question about matching the gold. I think gray would be perfect, as well as dark colors like navy or black. (Is brown too nuts?) White should be fine, too. But yeah, not as versatile as the navy skirt perhaps. Eeek!

      Delete
    5. If I have the chance, I could see myself picking up the gold skirt and returning the navy. I think there are obviously two ways of looking at this. I have a lot of dark colors and stripes in my closet and found a lot of my tops (chambray, stripes, liberty) went well with the navy. I could probably rock this twist on a dark color for a few seasons. It is almost black but clearly navy, which I actually love. It's so rich and reminds me of the Thomas Mason dark navy shirt dress I picked up recently.
The second option for me would be to get the gold. It would still go with all those things and it would be a nice splash of color once in awhile. I just think I'm going to not like the color in the somewhat near future. So, in reality, you can't go wrong!

    6. The velvet tanks have a small metal snap on each strap. Does anyone know what they're there for? I've never owned velvet and didn't realize it's a high maintenance fabric so I'm trying to find out how best to store and clean it. The tag says dry clean. Is anyone planning on hand washing it? Or can we hand wash velvet?

    7. I guess it is. I've never seen one before and I'm not sure how to use it. But, my bra didn't come out from under it so I guess I don't need to. Thanks!

    8. The bra keeps used to be really common on JCrew tops and dresses. I really like them, cause it makes your outfit shift proof.

  22. Has anyone changed out the strap on their Signet Flap bag? I ordered a navy and white striped strap to try on my gray bag, for when I want it to be more casual. I can't decide if I'll like this look. Have you tried it?

    1. Hi Cate - Sartorialchoices on Instagram posted the orange/blue guitar strap w her blue Signet bag. It looks really nice.

I'm also planning on the navy stripe w the brown flap. Haven't decided yet.

    2. Thank you, that looks really cute! I think that strap is perfect on the blue bag. I'm hoping the gray isn't too somber a color for a striped strap. It'll either make the bag more fun/casual or it will make it look weird, I can't decide which :)

    3. I put the navy and white striped strap on my yellow signet bag, and I love it!

    4. Now you're both making me wish I'd gotten a different color bag! Yellow with the navy/white sounds perfect. I just know myself and I always reach for a neutral colored bag. But I am tempted... The gray can still be returned.

  23. I picked up a few velvet pieces this weekend and am trying them on to whittle them down to just 2 (3 max).

    1. the navy velvet skirt. I'm keeping this one because I tried it on with a bunch of tops and they all work. I like that it's a dark color because I feel like this will add some longevity and hopefully won't look as dated later on.
    2. the gold and pink tank top. I'm keeping these instead of the black to add a little color into my wardrobe. I have a bunch of dark colors so I'm trying to incorporate a few splashes of color to spruce it up. The other option here is to keep the black and maybe the pink so the black top will probably have a longer life too.
    3. The maxi dress. Is there anyone else who's gotten this? I love the fit of it, but it's more of a midi dress on me. This doesn't necessarily bother me, but at $175 or so that I paid for it (with the 30% promotion last week), I'm pretty sure that even in a dark color, I won't find a lot of wears from this. On the other hand, part of me just wants to buy it and wear my plaid shirt over it to dress it down and just rock a bit of the 90's once in awhile.

I would love some opinions here. I don't want to spend so much money on something too trendy, but I also feel there's potential here to make the darker items fun staples. Thoughts?

    1. @jsjs, I was just commenting up thread that your reasoning for choosing the navy VS the gold skirt is a very good point, as it may not look as dated in a few years. Glad this skirt is a keeper for you in any case -- I'm waiting to receive the gold version soon!

As for the dress, hmmm, I think if I were you, I might return for now and re-buy at a better sale price, since it seems like there isn't all that many opportunities to wear it. Ugh, either way, I feel your predicament b/c this has happened to me as well! I think when I'm on the fence about an item, I have learned to just return it. I've found myself stuck with items that make me question what it is i really like about the item. There's a difference b/w keeping an item that you'll wear just a handful of times a year, but that you makes you so happy to wear VS something that you force yourself to wear just to get some use out of it. If your dress falls in the former category, than keep it! But if not, maybe return for now. (Also, maybe if you decide you don't love the midi length, you can buy if it goes on sale and have it hemmed a little.)

Oy, I hope I didn't add more confusion to your shopping dilemma! Good luck and let us know what you decide!

    2. I'd love to hear how you like the gold skirt. Honestly I want one too. I'm just trying to limit my velvet purchases so I would probably forgo the tanks and have the navy and gold skirts. That would be ideal. And then in my fantasy world the dress goes on sale and I get that too!
      Can't wait for your report!
