J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. I love this jacket, just got it the other day. the xsmall was big on me as well but I don't know if I want to wait until July to have it

  6. From my CARDMEMBER order.
Lace Skirt - I got my usual size 00. Waist fits, hips too tight. Sizing up would not work for me. Disappointing.

Stripe Skirt - size 00. Waist big, hips too tight. Very, very, very short and I'm 5'1"ish. Pass.

Rope Stripe Sailor Skirt - size 00. Fits well. Getting in/out is difficult but I love the flat front on shorts. Good length for me. Keeper.

Short Sleeve Denim Shirt - 00 a little tight in shoulders but the fit in body is perfect. The shoulder fit was better in 0 but bigger in body and too long for me. I'm sticking with the smaller size which I'm sure ill regret later :) love the color and not too thick.

  7. What is the difference b/t acetate and poly when it is used as a lining? Which is preferable?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I prefer acetate since it is derived from cellulose (a wood product) because this fabric actually breathes. Read more here.

  8. Eyelet-front sweatshirt (44933)
I hate this boxy silhouette JC's doing so much of these days - it's like, the new ruffles. When I pulled it out of the packaging it looks like a square with sleeves. I can only assume this is a cheap-to-make pattern being paraded as the "it" shape. I found it very unflattering - I'm short-waisted and the S was still too short. The sleeves were generous which just added to the odd shape. In the description it states that the eyelet is cut by hand, which is obvious because every one of the eyelets had loose threads or fraying fabric around it. Lastly, the marled cloud color was more like a marled oatmeal and did nothing for my skin tone. Pass, pass, pass. Oh, and the sweatshirt itself felt like the Haya sweats from a couple of years ago which shrunk like crazy in the wash, so this could actually end up being shorter if you're brave enough to launder it.

  9. I did a review of the Liberty Toothpick in Emma and Georgina floral yesterday here at this blog post.

Quick review for those of you in a hurry:

    1. Tall 31 was right call for me, I typically wear an Tall 8, and had I ordered the Tall 30 it would have been too tight in my hips. If you have a pear shape, definitely size up.

The length was fab, at 30" it skims my ankles making them exactly right for wearing with cute ballet flats and/or sandals.

    2. The color is a bit more primary than the J. Crew photos would have you believe, but that is not a bad thing, they look quite lovely in real life.

    3. The price right now with the 25% off is decent, I got mine with 30% off all sale items (a week or two ago?) and I don't have buyer's remorse, at all.

    1. Thanks for the review. I am surprised that the tall inseam is that short. I don't like to wear my pants that short at 5'10" so good to know. I will pass. I like the floral jeans but since my 12 year old is wearing them I know I should pass as I like to get years of wear from an item. Maybe if I can find a $20 pair somewhere;)

      Delete
    2. I wish my daughter would wear floral denim. She is anti-pants, insisting that she will only wear them with a dress or skirt. Maybe one day? :)

Yeah, I think the 30 inch inseam is meant to be a bit shorter intentionally, so that it is about two inches above the ankle (where it would fall on you at 5'10"), but I actually don't like it when pants fall there, it looks weird on my frame, so I feel your pain. Ankle length is awesome, so I will take it.

I bet this pair of jeans ends up at some J. Crew on deep clearance for $20...maybe it will be yours!

I wore the jeans again today because I was having issues with the pants I had picked out. These jeans felt great, and considering I was running into the city on the metro with my daughter, I was pretty stoked they felt just as great on the second wearing. :)

  10. I picked up the red eyelet pencil from the Crewlet on Saturday. I missed out on this color last year, so I was happy to see this. I do have the skirt in navy from the retail store and the fit and quality seems to be the same.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Went to the Crewlet yesterday and got the apple print "Thandie" (which I think is just a Tippi but in cotton vs. merino). It runs TTS if not a *smidge* small--I got a size small. I'll try to post a review w/pics on my blog later today.

Also was able to snag the Heartthrob silk shirt for about $20! This runs large like retail's Blythes. I got a XS in this.

    1. I'm considering this skirt right now! How does the sizing compare to the No2 Pencil?

      Delete
    2. I'm seconding the love of the Telegraph. I have it in three colors now (sienna, green, flannel) and need.to.stop.now. However I expect not to buy any more solid pencil skirts for years. These are the best fitting skirts I've ever encountered. (and I'm not the sort who loves everything J.Crew!)
Sizing for me was the same as the No.2, but the fit is much better.

      Delete
    3. I sized down in the telegraph pencil skirt. Maybe it's just me. I agree that it does fit much better than the No. 2. Extremely flattering!

      Delete
    4. More love for the telegraph skirt. I have two and wear them all the time. I actually sized up from my normal pencil skirt. The telegraph hits higher up at the waist where I am a little bit wider.

      Delete
    5. I agree with Sara - I sized up in the telegraph, but it also sits higher on my waist as well. I love it so much and find it much more "chic" than the #2 in the wool :-)

  14. I recieved the Camille dress in Neon Rose last night and man... it is NEON! However it fits beautifully. I may exchange it for the Neon Violet as I plan to wear it to a wedding and don't want to be too loud. Can anyone tell me if the Neon Violet is any more subdued?

Also recieved the Sera in the Traced Medallion print and it is lovely. I can't wait to wear it - I have many ideas for it :)

    1. Do you think it's TTS? The petites are sold out and I'm worried I'll swim in the 6 but that a 4 might not work on my hips...

    2. Erin, I just responded to your last post. I found the Camille to be TTS! HTH!

    3. I am planning to wear the neon violet one to a wedding this week. It's bright, but definitely more subdued than neon rose. I think you'll love it. I found the fit of the rose and violet ones to be the same, while the black one seemed a little shorter in my size (2).

      Delete
    4. I agree, I saw the neon violet in store today and it is definitely less neon than the neon rose. Quite a lovely and unusual shade actually.

  16. Does anyone have a review of the Contessa Suede pumps with snakeskin bow? Any toe cleavage and if so, does it look ok? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Has some toe cleavage but it didn't look so bad IMO, at least not as horrible as the snakeskin Everly. The problem with this one was the comfort. These would be car shoes since I couldn't walk in them for more than 15 minutes. Beautiful to look at though.

  18. Anyone have a review of the Tippi sweater in tipsy parsons print? Am I the only one who really loves that repeating bird print? It went on sale and seems to just be sitting there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're not the only one! That is a cute print, and I bought it in my usual size for thinly knit JC sweaters, L. Fits just as beautifully as the other Tippi I have in a solid burgundy color. There is really something just right about that Tippi shape.

      Delete
    2. Keilexandra: cagliari67 also reviewed the Tippi in Parsons print on the Sought & Found thread yesterday. She said:

"Just received the Tippi in the online-only Tipsy Parsons print - have to say the print is super-cute IRL, but sophisticated (it's definitely not Portlandia birds ;) But I will say it runs big! I compared it to another of my Tippis from last year in the same size and it is at least an inch longer in the body and arms, and an inch or so wider through the chest. Not enough for me to bother with exchanging, but be aware if you like your tops more fitted."

      HTH! :)

      Delete
    3. I bought one too, still waiting for its arrival, it was on my wish list when it came out and with it on sale plus an extra 30% I pounced. I think it's an adorable print and can't wait to get it. I hadn't heard much about it before I bought either but I like the Tippis and loved the print online so it seemed like a safe bet.

    4. Wore this sweater today, and yes, it runs big. Wishing I had got the S instead of the M. Sleeves particularly loose, body loose but looks OK. Print and colour are really nice irl, don't think the photos online do it justice!

  19. Seville wedges are fitting small this year. I was so happy that they are offering half sizes, unlike last year. I am a 7.5 and last year the 8 was way too big and the 7 was a bit snug but fit. I tried on the 7.5 and it fit like last year's 8 - falling off of me. So I went back to the 7 and it fit. Otherwise, the exact same shoe.

  20. My "Violet Dust" Valentinas arrived today, and they are going back. I'd been hoping that the color might have a little taupe-ish gray in it, like the jacquard top, but this is definitely an Easter-eggy, mother-of-the-bride opaque pastel mauve. I love my pink and purple princess shades, but this was a little much even for me. (Might reconsider at super sale, though.)

I am keeping the same shoe in the Apricot Mist shade, though. It's a lovely shade of nude for fair-skinned girls.

  21. Camp tunic dress (navy with white on sleeves and at neckline): fit like a tunic dress - length was about the same as the Jules maybe a bit longer. The material was just like the JCrew pyjamas, wrinkles in a second. The total deal breaker for me was the armhole and sleeve arrangement. I couldn't move my arms. The item fit with room to spare everywhere but something about the cut of the armholes made it almost impossible to move my arms a bit up or even forward. Quite bizarre.

Lightweight boy shirt in stripe was way too lightweight.

Eyelet top was a surprise love, thankfully. It is great quality and fits well (took my blouse size not perfect/boy shirt size which is one smaller) and the cuteness of it can be toned down by styling it with tougher pieces like jeans and/or fatigue-coloured items.

  22. I just posted a review of an in store only printed oxford perfect shirt from the crewlet on my blog. It is a pretty blue and white floral print. Love!

  23. Posted this elsewhere, but adding more to the mix:
*Boho stripe elbow-sleeve tee: TTS to a tad big. Like that this isn’t as short as other tees lately and is a nice soft cotton. The print is fun..reminds me of a retro 70s print almost, which I dig. Not sure I like how the patterns cut me off in certain places, but that’s a minor personal issue

*Floral-stripe tee: TTS, nice color combinations…just a tad short. But this was my favorite thing I tried on of the day. I can see throwing in on with shorts or jeans for an easy outfit this summer.

*Scalloped Dress in Navy: Beautiful color and hem details, but the fit was off, especially on top. My normal size was a tad big in the body, but somewhat tight in the chest. At 5’3, the regular length was just fine, hit above the knees.

*Perfect Shirt in Citrus: Thin and sheer, but a nude bra would suffice. This is made of the cotton lawn (cotton/silk) material that is known to be more delicate, but this one seems to be more so than those I own and have tried on in years past. Can see this snagging pretty easily.

Multistripe mini: short...whoa, but the colors are lovely...love the addition of black in the stripes. Wish this was made into an A line skirt.

Colorblock shift dress: This reminds me of the maritime dress due to the thick cotton, but a short-sleeve version; however, it fits smaller. I wear a small in the maritime and this was a tad snug in a small. Hit me a few inches above the knees..so not super short on me(5'3), but taller girls may have some issues. This was a pass...just wasn't feeling it at all on me.

  24. I just received the cap sleeve dress in tonal tweed, I had such high hopes for this dress, but its very short!! The pictures made it appear to hit at the knee, but its a good 2 1/2 inches above my knee! I'm not freakishly tall, I just don't know why JCrew can't make their wear to work dresses longer!!!

  26. Just a quick PSA for the Distressed Denim Belt that is still on sale for a fair price. I like this belt because you can actually wear it at your waist (or order up a size and wear it with jeans)! I reviewed it here on my blog today.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I second the love for this belt. I threw it onto one of my orders a few weeks ago and I've worn it almost every day. Its the perfect belt for me because it has enough holes that I can wear it with denim and at my waist with dresses. It also very soft so its easy to loop around the extra part when wearing it with dresses.

  27. I received a package today,

    LOVE IT ALL!

The pointe peplum top is awesome. Fits TTS. Thicker fabric. I bought the white color.

The cafe capri in Anastasia's flowers is so gorgeous. The fit is normal through the hips. I thought it might be a little looser through the leg but the fabric is so pretty.

The silk shirred-sleeve shirt is so beautiful, fits slightly roomy. I bought two colors I loved it so much.

  28. I posted a picture of the Seville wedge espadrilles, item 64498, color-navy. They look dark navy in the product photo, but are lighter irl. The color is closer to the "blue sea" color of the Biennial hobo.

Last year they were only available in whole sizes, and my regular size was too small, next size up was too big. This year they are offered in half sizes, but my regular whole size is a perfect fit. Also, they don't smell like glue, even though they're still made in China (which is imprinted in the toe box, along w/the size, rather than the interior side or heel).

Last but not least, please tell me which shade of blue is 'true navy'. I always thought it was the darker blue, but not quite as dark as JCrew makes it.

  29. I tried the Collection embroidered eyelet top in store. The eyelet is beautifully made but the fit is off. Tried the 0 first and I couldn't get the cami over my boobs (a problem that I never have). Anyway, the top was definitely my size but it looked like I was wearing one of my daughter's top. High-waisted doesn't even explain it, it is doll-sized. I tried the 2 and no problem with the cami here. The bigger size gave the top more length but also made it looser around the cleveage. If I had to buy it I would get the 2 probably because it was more proportioned. It probably looks better with high-waisted pants or shorts. It didn't uncover my belly but it looks a bit ridiculous with my regular jeans.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I second Ema's assessment of the embroidered eyelet top. Beautiful fabric but badly constucted. Also got a size 2 and could'nt get the cami over my bust either. Even though I'm not flat chested, I'm not super busty either. And why are so many tops so short? If I'm 5'4" and find them too short, I can't even imagine the problem for the taller ladies.

      Delete
    2. Same issues with the embroidered eyelet top. I don't know how this kind of problem slips past J. Crew. They would need probably one but no more than five actual women to try on this top to tell them that the fit is a disaster. Why wouldn't they have anyone try it on before mass producing it? Mind boggling.

  30. I've had really good luck with J. Crew Factory lately!

    - the Sylvia wedges are amazing (I wore them here); almost an exact version of the retail Martina wedges in bronzed clay that I desperately wanted last year but were just too pricey. They fit true to my usual shoe size (7 1/2) and I actually had to exchange them because I normally wear an 8 in J. Crew shoes which I find to run small, but these definitely run true to size.
    - J. Crew Factory ponte pants (I wore them here): I've never tried the retail Pixies, but I love the Factory ponte pants. I wasn't sure if I'd like them when I ordered them, but they are incredibly slimming and feel very well made. I got the larger of my two pant sizes, but probably would have been ok with my smaller size.
    - I just received the Factory linen dot sweater and version of the Gondola stripe top and they are both great, hoping to wear on my blog/review soon!

  31. I received the rip stop stripe city mini yesterday and it is a definite love!! Nice soft cotton, not parachute-y (rip stop always makes me think parachute!. I ordered my regular size 2 and it seemed a bit big, but not enough to size down. Length was nice as well, right above the knee (I am 5'2" ish). The only thing that bugs me is that it is not lined! I did not check for see throughness yet, but that would be my main concern with a white stripe skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bought a few new arrivals to try on and had the pleasure of running commentary from my sister. sigh.

The lace stripe dress (61239) is indecent. As in length. Bearing in mind that I'm 5'4" with regular length arms, the hem hit me at the tips of my fingers. That's the cut off for minis right? Well it's mini length on me at 32.5" long. It is also very straight with a stiffer fabric. If you have any semblance of curves you may be out of luck; tight across bust, puckering above the behind. I'd have to size up two sizes to get it to fit like a true shift dress. No I am not super curvy. However the fabric is sublime and looks perfect for spring/summer.

The daisy lace mini (22246) is the same fabric as the lace stripe dress. J.Crew forgot to add an inch on my size 0 because it comes in at 16" not the 17" that is purported on the website. It is a beautiful summer piece that I would consider keeping if I didn't have a similar item already. Might still consider on super sale since white never seems to say white.

The lightweight boy shirt in stripe fills my need for a stripe navy shirt in cotton but they are not kidding when describing this shirt as lightweight. It is semi-sheer but that doesn't bother me since I'm going to use it as an undershirt now and over camis in the late spring/summer. The quality could also be better and it would be lovelier with smaller stripes. I'm going to keep it maybe until I find better. It fits true to size, as in it fits the same as other boy shirts.

Absolutely adore the Transluscent stone necklace. I got the sunwashed pink and I'm considering the mint color one. The stones are well set and rich looking. It sits well on the neckline and the gold color isn't as garish as I'd originally thought. I really hope that the gold color keeps well and doesn't tarnish easily.

The colorblock sail jacket (92999) is cute in that "I regularly sail the New England coast" kind of way. I put it on and immmediately felt like I should be on a sailboat or racing skiff somewhere in the Atlantic. sigh. I usually detest colorblock clothing but in this case it works so beautifully. The little details like the leather toggles and brass color hardware make it feel like you borrowed this from someone's Martha Vineyard attic. If you're into the whole nautical look like I am, this is one you might want to consider. It is pretty true to size and the fit is a little on the loose side of course. I think the model in the online pic is wearing a size larger than her normal size. It's still a little pricey for a cotton jacket but it is well made. I also purchased the downtown field jacket (19034) and am now in a quandary over the two. One for sea, one for land? These are my first real casual cotton jackets. I usually stick with blazers, hacking jackets and leathers.

I'm always surprised by one item in an order that I never really had much hope for. This time around it's the pencil wrap skirt (40074). First off, this is not a pencil shirt. CFS needs her eyes checked. This skirt has a slight flare, along the lines of the box-pleated skirt but with much less pleating. My sister remarked that no clothing should be this complicated to put on (a zip, two buttons and hook and eye closures). But I feel better about all the back up closures should say, God forbid, a button pop on wrap skirt in public. The fabric content is 88% polyester to 12% silk; I am forgiving this because the fabric feels nice to the touch and the colors are 'ooooh' inducing. Wished they had lined it in something other than poly though. 18.5" long and pretty true to size. I'm keeping because it make me feel like a spring confection.

    1. I also picked up the J'Crewlet printed shift dress (41648) and belted sundress (23900). Both are ging back. I could not get past the white stitching along the front of the shift dressor the weirdly (read cost-cutting) placement of teh seems. The 'ivory' background is grayish-white. The belted sundress fared a little better but the cut did nothing for my shape. Love the anchor print. Would have considered keeping even though I have the silk shirt from retail. The fabric is incrediblely lightweight and would be sheer in daylight (think swimsuit cover-up).

And that's it for now. Whew!

    2. Oh, I agree on the Ivory Lace dress...indecent is an understatement at my height. I tried the size 8 and it measured it at 33.5" long. It could have been a fancy tunic if it were not so fitted in the butt.

  33. I just got my order from Factory and I got the printed pocket MINI skirt in red ikat. Wow, I did not think it would be so short. Also, the fabric is super cheap. It is going back. Not the quality I expect from j. crew at all! But I also ordered the pink cotton ruffle dress- it fits almost identical to the black cotton blakely dress that i got from regular j. crew a few years ago. It's obviously cheaper material but still super cute especially for the price.

  34. I recently ordered the Factory Double-Serge Cotton Mini in retro lemon and love it. It's not as short as feared and fits better in the waist on my pear shape than other J Crew skirts have. The only downside is it wrinkles easily, but I can live with that.

You can see it on my blog Via La Femme

  35. I purchased several items with the last promotion and loved just about everything. For reference I am 5'1", 103 lb, and usually wear a 0P or whatever is the smallest size J Crew offers.

Micro-tweed jacket in Poppy: great color mix of red, lavender and cobalt. The 00 fit me like a dream. Very comfortable, soft fabric with a bit of stretch almost like a sweater.

Embroidered Voile Top (size 00): so pretty, but very sheer. I love the black and white embroidery. Super lightweight silk-cotton fabric that would be perfect on a hot summer day. Nude undergarments a must, some may prefer to layer in a cami. I think this will go with a lot of the J Crew pencil skirts I already have.

Sparkle Dot Dress (size 00): I bought this on a whim not expecting much. When my husband saw it he said, whoa baby! It is on the short side, even on 5'1" me - probably about 3" above knee. It's quite fitted through the waist but extremely figure flattering. Love the rich marine blue color, and unexpectedly, also love the silver polka dots woven into the fabric in metallic thread. This is a keeper, and will be great for date nights.

Boho Stripe Tee (size xxs): Very pretty print in modern red and a kind of toast brown. I found the fit to be figure skimming and comfortable. It's not overly fitted. Cute little casual summer top.

  36. Whatever happened to tees that you didn't have to wear a tee under?

The Elbow-sleeve tee in stripe is completely sheer. Love the stripes and the color but I am not going to wear a cami under a t-shirt.

The Boy shirt in Peri plaid is cotton flannel? It sure does feel like it. I guess that's what supersoft means. I though it was straight cotton since I do not like flannel. Back it goes even though I love the colors.

And is it just me or are the Martina suede wedges now running small. My regular size feels so snug.

  37. HI, I tried the pleated dress in super 120's in my usual size 8 dress size. First, I know this will be a shocker, but it was short! Second, it was lined in poly which I really hate. The 8 was way too big in the chest (I am small chested) and heavier on the bottom. The waist actually fit at my waist but again top was too big and bottom fit well. I think if you are bigger on top than on bottom this could work for you. It is VERY light weight and did not feel at all like wool. I am going to try a size 6 but not holding out much hope. If you look at the model the waist sits very high on her. My guess is that this is because she is small chested and the smaller size rides up higher. The peach is really a true peach I would say. Again, if you are busty and smaller on bottom this dress could work well on you. :)

  39. Buttons. I've had to sew back buttons on a couple jackets this week, both fairly new. The Wallace & Barnes deck jacket had a button with threads already coming loose when it arrived a month ago. A Ludlow jacket I got just after Christmas was about to lose its button when I put it on this morning.

Is there a running problem with button sewing quality?

  41. @appgal: I don't know if this will help but I have the high waist brief in caspian paisley from last year (haven't tried this years brief) and it does hit pretty high on me like in the pic for the ones you are looking at. I find they look better on me if I pull them down slightly. I found the one I have was tts.

    1. Thanks, Jan! That helps. Did you find that they are looser around the waist (like the material just sits on top of the skin), or do they cut into the waist at all?

    2. I don't find them loose around the waist, they fit snug all the way up but not too tight. They feel like they hold you in a little if that makes sense. I bought them a few months after having a baby and I found them supportive in a good way. They still fit well now even though I lost weight in the tummy area. Hth

  42. Received my Tilda Rhinestone in Petite, I had ordered a 2 and 4. 2P was too small and the 4P was strange fit. The armholes were larger by 1/4" than the 2P which made it gape which is not a nice look. The shoulders also did not seem to lay right, they seemed to stand up off the shoulders. I had purchased the regular 2 and so did another try on and the regular is a better fit. Maybe I got a bad 4P but for the 1/2" difference in length not planning on exchanging. Also received the pre-order exploded umbrella tee, sorry did not like this at all. It looks muted online but is very garish, bright/neon blues and orange. Fit in a S was good which as noted by other JCAs is different than the peony tee which I took an XS. I did also order an XS and that was too tight. Material is the same as the Peony but it is slimmer and much longer a good 3" longer which does not work for me at 5' 1". Tucking in would chop off a good portion of design and the writing. BTW, online there is no writing but my tee says 'Cote d'Azur, FR on the bottom. So total miss on this entire order.
